The Incidence of Sprue Amongst Indians

چکیده
The area I refer to is a bit of country lying between two rivers with my headquarters as the centre. The country is fertile at both ends-, being fed by rivers. But the affected area is arid, the climate is hot and dry, and the soil consists mainly of conker and to a less extent of black clay and red earth. It is fed by rain and the people draw their water supply almost exclusively from rain-fed tanks open to foul contamination. The people are Hindus, poor, and generally constipated. They are nonvegetarians, but they eat little meat and not much vegetables, living mainly on the cereals they grow in their fields. The disease presents the three cardinal signs, viz., flatulent diarrhoea, glazed tongue with superficial erosions, and anaemia. It is very insidious in its onset, lasts for months with periods of comparative ease and gradually makes the person a physical wreckIt affects men in their prime. My youngest patient was 22 years and my oldest 55. So far I have seen only one woman affected, but I cannot offer this as a proof that it is rare in the female sex. I have not been able to get a history of dysentery?bacillary or amoebic?-in

The infrequency of multiple sclerosis in India may have genetic implications. We found (a) the HLA-A3 and HLA-B7 haplotypes amongst Indians to be lower than those reported in Caucasians, (b) no excess of HLA-A3 and HLA-B7 amongst our 27 multiple sclerosis patients compared to 330 controls; instead it was the reverse, (c) HLA-B12 as high as 74% in the "clinically definite" cases, against only 9%...

With the recession of malaria, bowel diseases bulk bigger in tropical health. If money is available to pay for them, there are effective treatments for bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and intestinal tuberculosis. Worm infestation...
متن کاملThe Incidence of Monilias in Human Fæces
Ashford (1917) and a number of subsequent workers regarded monilias, particularly Monilia psilosis, as the cause of sprue. Several species of the genus Monilia have been implicated in the causation of sprue and this disease was at one time regarded as moniliasis of the digestive tract. Although the result of recent work has shown that this view is no longer justifiable, there is a tendency for ...

Sir,?I read with interest the communication of Capt. Mukherji on ' The incidence of coccidiosis in the Arakans ' in 3'our December 1947 issue.
